(351 words) “The word about Igor’s regiment” is a work that is a historical monument of ancient literature: despite the small volume, the poem contains a description of Igor’s feat of troops, a landscape picture of ancient Russia and images of princes who ruled in the 12th century.
In his work, the author avoids describing the appearance and character of the characters, but at the same time we clearly imagine their images, and the actions of the princes are clear to us. One of the main characters in the Word is Igor, whom the author clearly sympathizes with. Prince Novgorod-Seversky appears before us in the role of a valiant warrior who is able to sacrifice many for the sake of protecting his homeland. Igor does not stop even a solar eclipse, which in Russia was considered a bad omen, portending trouble or death. But, in addition to the positive features of the character, the author also pays attention to those characteristics of Igor, which led the prince to defeat. The main character is proud and conceited, he does not consider it necessary to ask for help from other princes, and goes to the Polovtsi only with his brother Vsevolod, because he does not want to share fame and looted wealth with others. But the strength of the two young princes is not enough, and they lose the night battle with the Polovtsy, losing almost their entire army. The image of Igor makes a double impression on us: we admire him during the battle, while condemning his selfish behavior, manifested in certain episodes throughout the poem.
The author also gives the brother Igor, Vsevolod, heroic features. The courage and valor of the prince Bui-tour of Vsevolod cannot but surprise the reader: during the battle, he, as a true hero, shoots arrows at his enemies - he defends the Motherland, forgetting about his wounds and fears. We can say that the author, portraying the behavior of Vsevolod in battle, clearly resorts to the technique of hyperbolization, often used in folklore. Giving the prince heroic qualities, the author, in contrast, emphasizes his selfishness and pride, characteristic of his brother.
But in the poem "The Word about Igor's Regiment" there is still one character that is ideal, according to the author, - Prince of Kiev, Svyatoslav. The creator of the "Word" portrays him as the head of the whole state. It is Svyatoslav who unites all of Russia and takes care of its interests: he is very saddened by the behavior of Igor and Vsevolod, so Svyatoslav convenes the princes with a request for help to the brothers in need. His “golden word, mixed with tears” is an important fragment of the whole poem, because it expresses the author’s idea of uniting Russian princes.
