At that time, there was a war in the Caucasus, the Tatars could capture captive lone travelers, so they had to go with a group. Zhilin set off on his journey, but at some point he was tired of stopping and waiting forever, so together with officer Kostylin they drove on themselves.
Luck was not on their side: on the way they ran into the Tatars, and Kostylin, instead of covering his comrade, rushed to run, leaving Zhilin, who was seized and locked in a barn. But Kostylin himself was caught and, together with his partner, sold to another Tatar. The same demanded that the officers write letters home, asking for a ransom. Zhilin said that his family does not have that kind of money, so either he will pay a smaller amount, or let him be killed. With hostility, but his terms were accepted. But the hero did not write a letter to his mother, knowing that she could not live without this money, so he indicated another address, and he began to develop an escape plan.
For a month, he watched the life of the Tatars, while simultaneously inspecting the area and doing a dig. Among other things, he was engaged in needlework, which was a wonder for this people. People began to converge to him, so that he repaired their things. And the neighbor girl Dina Zhilin made dolls, she secretly brought him some food.
Once the officers had the opportunity to escape, which they took advantage of. But after some time, Kostylin began to lag behind, referring to the boots that rubbed his legs. This greatly complicated their path, and soon they were caught. Now they were no longer planted in the barn, but in a deep hole so that they would not get out.
After a couple of days of captivity, Dina came to Zhilin and said that they were going to kill him. With her help, the captive managed to escape, and Kostylin, a wealthy nobleman, refused to go. The fugitive did not manage to remove the block, which greatly complicated his task. When he was completely tired, he began to crawl across the field, dreaming of remaining inconspicuous and not falling into the sight of the Tatars. But the Tatars noticed him and went to him, then Zhilin began to scream and call for help, hoping that maybe someone is now nearby and can save him. And so it happened, there was a detachment of Russians nearby, who, having heard a call for help, immediately responded to him. Zhilin told them about his adventure, deciding that it would be better for him to remain here to serve, because it was clear to him that it was not his fate to go to his mother.
