Women — very young and older — were sitting on Kyodzhinskaya Street, and while knitting they passed the time until the fishermen returned. Donna Pasqua and Donna Libera went to sea with their husbands, and Luchetta and Orsetta left their grooms. The Toffolo boatman passed by, and he wanted to chat with the beauties; First and foremost, he turned to young Kekka, the younger sister of Donna Libera and Orsetta, but she responded by hinting that it would be nice for Toffolo to stomp his way. Then the offended Toffolo sat down at Luchetta and began to be nice to her, and when a seller of baked pumpkin happened nearby, he treated her with this sophisticated treat. After sitting for a while, Toffolo got up and left, and a swarmer began between the women: Kekka reproached Luchetta for excessive frivolity, she objected that Kekka was simply envious - none of the guys paid any attention to her, because she was so poor. Donna Pasqua, the wife of her brother, padron Tony, stood up for Luchetta, and her two sisters, Orsetta and Donna Liber, stood for Kekka. Offensive nicknames - Kekka-curdress, Luchetta-balabolka, Pasqua-cod - and very vicious recriminations were used.
So they cursed, shouted, just did not fight, when the fish merchant Vicenzo said that Tartan padron Toni returned to the harbor. Then the women together began to ask Vicenzo for heaven’s sake not to tell the men about their quarrel - it hurts too much they don’t like this. However, barely meeting the fishermen, they themselves talked about everything.
It turned out that Tony’s brother, Beppo, brought his bride Orsette a beautiful ring, and left his sister, Luchetta, without a present, Luchetta was offended and began to denigrate Orsetta in Beppo's eyes: she swears like the last market bazaar, and she shamelessly with the boatman Toffolo flirting, Beppo replied that he would deal with Orsetta, and that Toffolo would scatter the villain on the first day.
In the meantime, Orsetta and Kekka met Tita-Nana and did not regret the colors, painting how his fianco-tail bride Luchetta obscenely sat next to Toffolo, chatted with him and even took a piece of baked pumpkin from him. The sisters succeeded: the furious Tita-Nana declared that Luchetta was no longer his bride, but he, despicable Toffolo, let me catch him and chop him to pieces like a shark.
Beppo was the first to encounter Toffolo near the padron’s house. He rushed at the boatman with a knife, he began to throw stones at the enemy, but soon, in his misfortune, the padron Tony and Tita-Nana, both armed with daggers, came running to the noise of the fight. Toffolo could only flee; running away to a safe distance, he shouted that he had taken them this time, but he wouldn’t leave it like that and would certainly file a lawsuit against the offenders today.
Toffolo kept his promise and went straight to the court from the scene of the fight. The judge was temporarily away, so the complainant was received by his assistant, Isidoro, who had to listen to the chaotic story of the innocently injured boatman. Toffolo demanded that he be sentenced to galleys in the most serious manner - Beppo, Tita-Nana and padron Tony. To tell the truth, the assistant judge didn’t really want to mess around with all this noisy company, but if a complaint has been filed, there’s nothing to be done; Toffolo called the witnesses padron Fortunato, his wife Liber and his sister-in-law Orsette with Kekka, as well as Donna Pasqua and Luchetta. He even volunteered to show the bailiff where they all live, and promised to get a drink if he was in a hurry.
Donna Pasqua and Luchetta, meanwhile, sat and lamented over what troubles, and not for the first time, their woman talkativeness brought, and Tita-Nana was just looking for them to announce her refusal from Luchetta. Gathering his courage, he resolutely said that from now on an anemone Luchetga could consider himself free from all promises, in response to which the girl returned to him all the presents. Tita-Nana was embarrassed, Lucetga burst into tears: young people, of course, loved each other, but pride did not allow them to immediately back down.
The explanation of Titus-Nana with Luchetta was interrupted by the bailiff, who demanded that Donna Pasqua and his sister-in-law immediately go to court. Donna Pasqua, hearing about the trial, began to bitterly kill herself, they say, now everything is gone, they are ruined. Tita-Nana, robbing finally confusion, again began to blame the frivolity of Luchetta.
While Toffolo and the bailiff were gathering witnesses, Vicenzo came to Isidoro to find out if it was possible to end the matter in some way. The assistant judge explained that yes, it is possible, but only on the condition that the offended party agrees to go to the world. Isidoro himself promised in every way to contribute to reconciliation, for which Vicenzo promised him a good basket of fresh fish.
Finally, witnesses appeared: Padron Fortunato and five women with him. All of them were extremely excited and began to set out to the representative of the law all their versions of the collision at the home of Padron Tony at once. Isidoro, forcibly shouting over the general howl, ordered everyone to leave his office and enter strictly in turn.
The first he called Kekka, and she told him rather smoothly about the fight. Then Isidoro spoke to the girl on an irrelevant topic and asked if she had many boyfriends. Kekka replied that she had no boyfriends, since she was very poor. Isidoro promised to help her with the dowry, and then asked who Kekka would like to have as her boyfriend. The girl called Tita Nana - after all, he still refused Luchetta.
The second Isidoro summoned Orsette for questioning. She was older and more sophisticated Kekka, so talking to her was not easy for the assistant judge, but in the end he got her to confirm the story of his younger sister and let him go. Donna Lieber went into the office, but no good came out of the conversation with her, because she pretended to be deaf, mainly because she did not want to answer the question of how old she was. Padron Fortunato was naturally tongue-tied, and even spoke in such a wild Chioggian dialect that the Venetian Isidoro was not able to understand a word and after a couple of phrases, thanking him for help, he put this witness away. It was enough with him; he refused to listen to Donna Pasqua and Luchetta flatly, which offended both of them very much. Beppo was tired of hiding from justice: he decided to go whip Orsette on the cheeks, toff Toffolo's ears, and there he could go to jail. But he met Orsette, not one, but in the company of sisters, who joined his efforts to cool his ardor, suggesting that in fact Toffolo was not spinning with Orsetta, but with Luchetta and Kekka. On the other hand, the sisters added, Beppo needs to run, since Luchetta and Don Pasqua obviously want to destroy him - because it was not for nothing that they chatted for an hour with the assistant judge. But then Tony's padron came up to them and reassured them that everything was in order, Isidoro told them not to worry. Vicenzo who appeared after him denied the padron: Toffolo does not want to go to the world, therefore Beppo must run. Tita Nana, in turn, began to refute the words of Vicenzo: Isidoro himself told him that the brawlers had nothing to fear. The last word, it would seem, was left to the bailiff, who ordered everyone to immediately go to court, but there Isidoro assured everyone that since he promised to settle the matter in peace, everything would be settled.
Upon leaving the court, the women suddenly got into a grapple again, taking to heart that Tita-Nane kindly said goodbye to Kekka, but not very much to Luchetta. This time they were separated by Fortunato's platform. At the same time, in the judge’s office, Tita-Nana was bewildered by Isidoro, saying that he didn’t like Kekka, but that he loved Luchetta, and if in the morning he said the opposite, it’s from evil,
Toffolo also did not live up to the expectations of the assistant judge: he resolutely did not want to go to the world, claiming that Tita-Nana, Beppo and Tony padron would certainly kill him. Tita-Nane promised not to touch the boatman if he left Luchetta alone, and then it gradually became clear that Luchetta Toffolo was not needed at all and that he was kind enough to Kekke out of spite for her. On this, Toffolo and Tita-Nane made peace, hugged and were already together for a drink, when Beppo came running and said that the women had kissed again - they were fighting and hiding each other on what the light was, right down to "dog shit." The men wanted to separate them, but they started up themselves and began to wave their fists.
Isidoro got tired of it all beyond measure. Without long conversations, he woo Kekka for Toffolo. Donna Libera and Padron Fortunato at first refused to accept the family of a sickly wealthy boatman, but then still yielded to Isidoro's persuasions and arguments. Kekka, having previously ascertained from Isidoro that she had nothing to hope on Tita-Nana, readily agreed to become Toffolo's wife. The news of Kekka's marriage puzzled Orsett: how is it that the younger sister marries earlier and older. It’s not humanly - it’s obvious that it’s time for her to put up with Beppo. Reconciliation turned out to be easy, since everyone already understood that the quarrel had come about because of a trifle and a misunderstanding. Then Luchetta stood on her hind legs: while she lives in her brother’s house, the second daughter-in-law should not be there. But the way out was obvious: as soon as Kekka marries Toffolo, Luchetta is no longer jealous of Tita-Nana and may become his wife. Donna Pasqua thought she would resist, but Tony's padron only had to show her a weighty stick in order to suppress all objections. The case was for Tita-Nana, but by joint efforts and he was vividly persuaded.
Preparations began immediately for the three weddings, which promised to be funny and drunk. Happy brides heartily thanked the magnanimous Isidoro, but at the same time they also earnestly asked not to spread rumors in Venice that the kojinki were allegedly clumsy and like to cling.
