In the ancient City of Masters there are people who know how to do everything in the world. The city is captured by foreign soldiers, its ruler becomes the Duke de Malicorne, the viceroy of a foreign king.

For objectionable speeches, city residents are executed or locked in the Tower of Silence.

In the early morning, a sweeper appears in the square, nicknamed the people of Karakol.

Despite the fact that the young man is a hunchback, he is always cheerful and friendly. Today is his birthday. On the same day, the son of the burgomaster, nicknamed Click-Klyak, was born.

The old fortuneteller, Tafaro's grandmother, predicts to Karakol that he will marry the first beauty of the city and get rid of his hump when he gets rid of the hump of the city.

Although you are a hunchback, you have a direct soul. And it happens and vice versa.

Karakol gives flowers to the first beauty of the city of Veronica.

This is noticed by Click-Klyak and threatens to send the hunchback to the Tower of Silence. He says that the adviser to the duke, Guillaume Gottschalk, has a magic sword.

The people are waiting for the May holiday, but the duke cancels it: songs and dances prevent him from sleeping. De Malicorne issues a decree to take off his hats in front of him and his adviser. The violator of this decree will go to prison. At the suggestion of Karakol, all but the Click-Klyak hang their hats on the trees.

Karakol chuckles at Gottschalk who came to the square, and he orders the soldiers to seize the first ones. Among them is Karakol, but the duke who appears appears to let everyone go, ordering them to pay a large fine. Karakol's friend, gunsmith Martin, takes a hunchback to live with him.

Veronica admits to Tafaro's grandmother that she is not indifferent to Karakol and does not notice that he is a hunchback.

The Duke de Malicorn orders Advisor Gottschalk to find out everything about Karakol. He wonders why the simple sweeper is so interceded in the city. In addition, the duke wants to know what the inhabitants say about himself.

To the Duke comes Click-Klyak with his burgomaster father. Click-Gag makes fun of Karakol for his hump, but the adviser orders him to shut up, since Malicorn is also a hunchback. The Duke orders to send Martin to the gunsmith's tower.

Having learned from Klik-Klyak about the first beauty of the city, de Malicorn promises to help the son of the burgomaster marry her if he saves the city from Karakol. Otherwise, the duke will give Veronica to the sweeper.

Veronica arrives at the castle with her father.De Malicorne offers the girl to marry Click-Klyak, but she refuses. Then the duke decides to marry her himself. Veronica is against, but de Malicorn still appoints a wedding day.

In a secluded forest clearing, where the sweeper goes for branches, Klik-Klyak digs a hole for Karakol. Soon the duke appears there, and both accidentally fall into the pit. The Karakol who came for the branches pulls out the Click-Klyak. De Malicorne, who introduced himself as the keeper of the seal, asks Karakol for help and offers the sweeper a three-day seal as a reward.

This seal can send a person to the block, but it can save thousands of people from execution, from prison, from exile. All the gates and locks open in front of her.

Caracol helps the duke by first luring the seal. The duke gets out of the pit and pushes the sweeper there.

Action Three

A holiday is coming, but the people are not up to the fun. Martin and his gunsmith friends were imprisoned in a tower, Karakol disappeared, Veronica was forcibly given out to marry the duke.

The duke’s stretcher appears on the square under the guard of soldiers, and after them - another stretcher. From the first comes the disguised Karakol, from the second - the duke. The sweeper fights with the duke and kills him, after which adviser Gotschalk kills the sweeper with his magic sword. Disguised as a soldier, Martin and his friends raise a rebellion. Martin takes the sword from the adviser.

This is the fate of anyone who wants to take away our freedom and honor. Take care of them, friends! There is nothing more expensive than them in the world.

The city is free. Counselor and Click-Klyak with his father captured.Gottschalk asks to be executed with a magic sword, but the people feel a catch. On the advice of grandmother Tafaro, they put the sword into the hand of a dead Karakol and it comes to life. He tells how he was pulled out of the pit, he ran to the Tower of Silence and freed Martin with his friends. The people notice that Karakol no longer has a hump.

Caracol invites Veronica to marry him, and the girl happily agrees. The people celebrate the liberation and wedding of Veronica and Karakol.
